7 Starting position

7.1 Tutorial

When setting up the board it is important to get the squares for king and queen right. There is a simple rule:
White queen on a white square, black queen on a black square. The king stands next to its queen. Kings are opposite each other; so are queens.
This is how the pieces are set up.

The squares on the chessboard
Click 'Play' to start the animation. You can also click 'Step'

7.2 Exercises

Move directly on the board to input a solution. Either click first on the start square and then on the target square. Or click on the piece, hold on to it, move it tot he target square and let go of it. The button ‘Left arrow’ takes back the move.

Finding a file
Click on a square in the c-file.
Finding a rank
Tap / click on a square on the seventh rank.
Finding a square
Tap / click on the squares 'f6' and 'c4'
The queens
Click on the squares on which the queens are placed in the starting position.
The kings
Click on the squares on which the kings are placed in the starting position.
The centre
Tap / click on all four central squares.
Finding a file and a rank
Move the rook horizontally to the 'c-file', then vertically to the 'seventh rank'.
Finding a rank and a file
Move the bishop to the fifth rank and then to the a-file.
Before you position the pieces, you must place the board in the correct position. Ensure that you have a white square in the right-hand corner – this applies whether you are playing with White or Black.
